Privacy Policy: ReelCamp
Last updated: 7 November 2026
The short version
- Your fishing stays on your phone. Your catches, photos, trips, secret locations and settings are kept on your phone, not by us.
- Your exact position stays on your phone. To get the weather and tides, the app sends a position rounded to about 1 km (or the spot you're looking at) to our weather server, which never logs or stores it. Apple Maps draws the area on your screen.
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics. We don't sell, rent or share your information with anyone for marketing.
- You're in charge. Location, camera, photos and Face ID are all optional, and Me → Delete all my data on this phone wipes everything ReelCamp has saved.
Who we are
ReelCamp is made by Dale Morgan Coggan, a sole trader in Queensland, Australia (ABN 76 442 194 772; Queensland 4074, Australia) ("we", "us"). Contact: [email protected].
What ReelCamp keeps on your phone
All of this is saved in ReelCamp's own storage on your phone. We can't see it, and it isn't sent to us.
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your answers to the welcome questions (how you fish, where you fish from, your state or area, how you camp) and your How you fish answers (experience, bait and lures, gear, what you find hard) | To show the fish, spots, rules and campsites that suit you | Until you change them or delete your data |
| The area you chose, or the place Today shows | So the app opens on your area | Until you change it or delete your data |
| Your settings (sounds, map look, wind units) | So they stay as you set them | Until you change them or delete your data |
| Fishing alerts, if you turn them on, and the reminders they plan | Your phone's own notification system holds them, so they can arrive while the app is closed. They're worked out on the phone from the last saved forecast | Until each one arrives, or you turn alerts off |
| Trips you plan: where, when, how you're fishing and camping, your packing list | So the plan is there when you need it | Until you delete the trip or your data |
| Your catches: the fish, length, weight, date, notes, and where you caught it, at the level you pick: Rough area (just the area name), Exact spot (your GPS position), or Private (no location) | Your catch log, personal bests and "What works for you" | Until you delete the catch or your data |
| Catch photos | Shown with your catches. Each photo is saved again as a plain picture, so its hidden details (GPS position, camera, date) are removed. Kept at most 2048 pixels on the longest side | Until you delete the catch or your data |
| Secret locations: the name, kind, notes and GPS position of each spot you save | Your own saved spots. Locked behind Face ID or your passcode, and locked again whenever you leave the app or the Map tab. Directions hands that one spot's position to Apple Maps, only when you tap it | Until you delete them or your data |
| Saved forecasts for no signal: the last 3 places you looked at, and up to 12 you choose to save | So the weather and tides still show where there's no signal, with the time they were saved | Replaced as you look at new places, or until you delete your data |
Your phone's backups. If you back up your iPhone (iCloud or a computer), the backup can include ReelCamp's saved data, including catch photos and secret locations. That backup is yours, under Apple's terms. We can't see it.
Your location
- ReelCamp asks for your location only when you ask for it (Continue on its location card, Use my location, the map's find-me button, or the compass), never on first opening, and only while you're using the app. It never uses your location in the background.
- It's used to show spots, campsites and bait and tackle shops near you, to work out which state's fishing rules apply, to get the weather and tides for your area, to point the compass at true north, and, if you choose, to save a catch or a secret location.
- Your exact position stays on your phone. What leaves it: the weather request below (rounded to about 1 km); Apple's map pictures for the area on your screen (see *Maps*); and, only when you tap them, Directions or Bait and tackle near you, which open Apple Maps at that place.
- Saying no is fine: you can choose an area instead, and everything still works.
- You can change this any time in your iPhone's Settings → ReelCamp → Location.
What leaves your phone
Weather, tides and swell
To show the forecast, the app sends a position to our weather server: either your position rounded to about 1 km, or the position of the spot, campsite or place you're looking at. Nothing else about you goes with it.
Our server:
- rounds the position again, to about 1 km, before it does anything with it;
- never logs or stores a position, not even the rounded one. To share a forecast between everyone near the same place, it keeps a scrambled code for each place (it can't be turned back into a place without a secret key only our server holds) for up to 180 days, with that place's forecast for up to 3 days. Nothing in it is about a person or a phone;
- asks WillyWeather (an Australian weather company) for the forecast, using that rounded position. WillyWeather receives the request from our server, not from your phone, with nothing that identifies you;
- counts how many requests come from each internet address in a minute, to stop misuse. That count is kept in memory only, never written down, and ignored after a minute.
Our server runs on Supabase, in its Sydney data centre. Like any internet service, Supabase keeps routine technical records for a short time, such as when a request arrived and the internet address it came from, under its own privacy terms. The position travels inside the request, so it isn't in those records.
Maps
The maps in ReelCamp are Apple Maps. To draw the map, your phone asks Apple for the map pictures of the area on screen, under Apple's privacy policy. Directions and Bait and tackle near you open the Apple Maps app with that place or search, near your position rounded to about 1 km.
When you type a place in Quick search that isn't in ReelCamp's own lists, the words you typed are sent to Apple's place lookup to find it. Your position isn't sent with them.
When you choose an area on the map, the app checks whether you have an internet connection by contacting Apple's standard test address. Nothing about you is sent.
Wave buoys
On Boat day, in Queensland, the app asks the Queensland Government's open data portal for the latest readings from its wave buoys. It asks for every buoy at once, so your position isn't sent. Like any website, the portal sees the request come in from your internet address, under the Queensland Government's own privacy terms.
Links, calls and emails
Official pages (fishing rules, parks, the Bureau of Meteorology and others) open in your browser. Call and Email buttons open your phone's own apps. What you send from there goes to whoever you contact, not to us, unless you email us.
If you email us
We get your email address and whatever you write. The Email button fills in the app's version and your iPhone's software version to help us; delete them if you like. We use your email only to reply to you, and delete it when it's no longer needed.
Nothing else
There's no analytics, advertising, crash reporting or tracking in ReelCamp, and it doesn't register your phone for push notifications: fishing alerts are planned on the phone itself.
Camera, photos and Face ID
- Camera and photos: only the photos you choose or take. They're used to identify a fish or log a catch, and are saved again without their hidden location details (see the table above).
- Face ID: your iPhone checks your face or passcode and tells ReelCamp only "yes" or "no". ReelCamp never sees or keeps anything about your face.
Who else is involved
We don't sell or share your information. The only outside services ReelCamp uses are:
| Service | What it receives | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase (runs our weather server) | The rounded position for a forecast; routine technical records | Sydney, Australia. Supabase Inc. is an American company and may be able to reach that data in providing its service |
| WillyWeather | The rounded position, from our server | Australia |
| Queensland Government open data portal (wave buoys, on Boat day) | A request for every buoy's latest reading, straight from your phone: like any web request it carries your internet address, but no position and nothing about you (the phone picks the nearest buoy itself) | Australia |
| Apple (Maps, place lookup, Face ID, notifications, iPhone backups, the App Store) | Map requests for the areas you view; the place names you type in Quick search; Directions and searches you tap; the rest stays on your phone or in your own Apple account | Apple is an American company |
Each of these may use what it receives only to provide its service, under its own privacy policy.
Your rights, and deleting your data
Because nearly everything ReelCamp keeps is on your phone, it's already in your hands:
- Change it: in the app (Me, your trips and catches).
- Delete it all: Me → Delete all my data on this phone. This clears your catches and their photos, trips, secret locations, settings, saved forecasts, your chosen area and your answers, and turns off and cancels any planned alerts, straight away. Deleting the app also deletes what it saved on the phone (a copy may remain in your own iPhone backups).
- Ask us: email [email protected] if you want to know what we hold about you (for most people, nothing) or to have it corrected or deleted. We'll answer within 30 days.
If you think we've mishandled your personal information, please tell us first: we'll look into it and reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner: oaic.gov.au.
If you're outside Australia
ReelCamp is planned for the App Stores in the US, UK, New Zealand, Canada and Japan. Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, or to correct or delete it, by emailing [email protected]. We use your location, camera, photos and Face ID only with your permission, which you can take back any time in your phone's Settings. We use the rounded position for the forecast because you asked the app for it.
Children
ReelCamp is made for adults and families who fish. It doesn't ask anyone's age and doesn't collect anything that identifies you, so we hold nothing about anyone of any age.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too, and we'll say so in the app's update notes when it matters.
